“100 up – on the
Downs” - by Tom Walker |
|

|
This contemporary picture (left) was commissioned by the 2003/04 Club Captain, David Nealer, to celebrate the centenary of West Hove
Golf Club in 2010.
The picture is the work of the renowned Sussex artist Tom Walker.
Tom used pastels on black paper for this, his first
golf-related subject.
He is, however, very well known for his
other works, particularly his ‘Snooker in the Frame' series of pictures for which he has been featured on
BBC television.
David presented the picture to the Club today, 22 September 2010,
on its centenary,
Further information about this artwork is shown below, and is
also displayed adjacent to the picture in the Clubhouse.
The photo' below shows David (right) presenting the picture to Club
Captain Gordon Eaton.
|
|
This composition features two golf-balls representing the
Club’s golf course and
driving-range. The golfer is aiming at the 100 yard marker, or
is that simply the age of the Club? The white dots represent
practice balls and form the shape of three 'martlets'. These,
together with the crossed golf-clubs are, of course, an integral
part of the Club's logo.
The darker band across the centre of the picture features West Hove’s imposing Clubhouse
and shows the four dormer
windows in the roof, the semi-circular windows to the central
atrium, the steps to the front entrance doors and much more.
And, there are over 100 ‘dimples’ in the artwork to signify
that the life of the Club, after a turbulent past, will extend
beyond its centenary. To be fair, the artist has admitted that
this is more coincidental than deliberate!

A birdie at the

can
clearly see a blue tit feeding its young. We had hoped to
submit the photos to the BBC's Springwatch list of unusual
nesting sites but discovered that a cricket club had reported
a very similar story just two days earlier. We are pleased to
report that the chicks all fledged and left the nest today. |
