LET
Pre-Qualifying
In today's second round, over La Manga's North Course,
Stacey Rodger shot a three-over par 74. She had dropped three
shots after just seven
holes but made a big improvement to shoot level-par over the
last eleven holes. At the half-way stage of this
Pre-Qualifying event she is 12 over par which places her in
70th position. Remarkably, that is only five shots off from
the top 35 (and ties) which would see her progress to the
'Final Qualifying' event, so there is plenty to play for.
It is worth noting that only ten of the competitors (or less
than 5%) are currently under par, reflecting the difficulty of
the two courses. |

The Ladies European Tour (LET) Pre-Qualifying 2012 latest
Stacey Rodger was in the last group to tee-off today in the
2012 LET Pre-Qualifying first round over La Manga's par 73
South Course. She played the front-nine in a respectable
2-over par 39 but unfortunately fell away on the back-nine
dropping six shots in the last six holes. This leaves her tied
in 84th position from a field of 102 so tomorrow,
when she tees off at 9.35am over the par 71 North Course, she
will need to pull out all the stops. Watch this space. |

Follow Stacey
Rodger's progress at La Manga
West Hove's Ladies' Champion, Stacey Rodger, will tomorrow
begin her quest to join the elite 2012 Ladies European Tour
(LET). She will be competing amongst a field of 204 of the
world's best lady golfers at the La Manga Club in Spain.
Tomorrow sees the first round of the LET Pre-Qualifying event
and Stacey has been drawn to play alongside two professional
golfers. One is her name-sake from Canada, Stacey Bieber, and
the other is Belgium's Lien Willems who became their national
champion as a 13 year old. They tee off at 1.30pm tomorrow on
La Manga's South course and follow that up by playing the
North course on Monday from 9.35am.
Two further rounds follow on Tuesday and Wednesday, but to
progress to the next stage Stacey must finish in the top 35 of
her Group - a very tough challenge.
We hope to be able to follow Stacey's progress on this
website. |

2012 beckons for Stacey Rodger
By all accounts, 23 year-old Stacey Rodger has had a good
2011. As the year ends we review her early golfing years, and
her past year’s achievements, before looking forward to the
future.
Stacey joined West Hove GC at the tender age of 12 having
taken part in a taster session at the Club. She showed a
natural talent for the game and with encouragement from her
family – father Stuart, uncles Pete & Richard and brother Carl
all being West Hove members – she made quick progress. Her
handicap tumbled from 45 to scratch and in her teens she
became the Sussex Girls Under-18 and Sussex Ladies champion.
She also now holds several course records in Sussex and has
won the Ladies’ Championships at West Hove (7 times), East
Sussex National GC (4 times) and once at West Sussex GC. She
has also won the Brighton & District Golfing Society’s (BDGS)
Ladies’ Championship in the last six years she has competed!
This pedigree enabled her to take up a 4-year golf based
scholarship at the Missouri State University in America where
she graduated in 2010 with a degree in Exercise and Movement
Science. She is also now a fully certified health and fitness
specialist.
Competing under the
West Hove
banner at a national level, 2011 proved to be a particularly
successful year for Stacey. She finished in a very creditable
sixteenth place in the EWGA 2011 Order of Merit thanks to an
eighteenth place in
the Welsh
Ladies Open Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, a twentieth
place in the Ladies' British Open Amateur
Stroke Play Championship and by reaching the last sixteen of
the English Women's Amateur Championship.
For good measure, and amongst other notable achievements in
2011, Stacey also won the BDGS Ladies' Championship, the West
Hove Ladies’ Championship and became the Sussex County Ladies'
Champion for a second time, the first coming some five years
ago before her golf scholarship in the USA.
However, all of the above pales into insignificance compared
to the challenge now awaiting her in 2012. In just a few days’
time Stacey will be flying to Spain to compete in the Ladies’
European Tour Qualifying (LET Q) School at La Manga GC to seek
a European Tour Card. The LET Q School potentially comprises
nine rounds of golf between 8 and 19 January.
The opposition will be exceedingly tough with a mix of both
professional and the best amateur lady golfers from around the
world. Indeed, it is reported that five of China’s national
team are planning to attend as part of their development
programme to prepare for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to be
held in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. This will be only the third time golf has featured in
the Olympics and the first time since 1904!
Stacey is well aware of just how difficult, and costly, it
will be at the LET Q School but she goes with great
determination and a very strong work ethic. The next few weeks
could have a significant effect on Stacey’s future and her
family, and everybody at the Club, wishes her every success.
Her father, Stuart, will be going out to Spain to support her
and we will monitor her progress here.
Good luck

"Get
into Golf" at West Hove Golf Club
Do you know of any adult that might like to give golf a go or,
put another way, 'Get into Golf'? Perhaps somebody who played
years ago but who might now like to return to the game or
somebody who believes it too costly to get started.
Well, starting in January 2012, West Hove Golf
Club's Professionals will be providing low-cost £4 taster
sessions for such people. 'Get
Into Golf' in Sussex is a campaign designed to increase ADULT
participation in golf and West Hove is one of only ten Clubs
in Sussex to have been selected as a 'Get Into Golf' Centre.
We will offer a
low-cost, fun, engaging and enjoyable introduction to the
sport
through regular 'Get Into Golf' sessions throughout 2012. It’s
your chance to see what is on offer and to find out about
professional coaching and our Club.
This is how it works:
In January 2012, and running throughout the new year, the
Sussex Golf Partnership will be supporting West Hove GC to
provide
£4 taster sessions
to adult beginners on a fortnightly basis. (These sessions, as
indicated above, will also be available to anyone who hasn't
played golf for many years but who would like to
return to the sport).
You can attend more than one taster session, if needed, but
hopefully will want to take up one of the various follow-on
opportunities.
please click
here for details
The
first taster session will take place on our Driving Range at
10am on Sunday 8 January 2012. You MUST book in advance to
participate in a 'Get into Golf' taster session as group sizes
will be limited to ensure maximum opportunity and quality of
delivery. To book your place please 'phone our Head
Professional, Graeme Crompton, on 01273 413494 or,
alternatively, email him at

Congratulations to Raoul
Ellis
Raoul Ellis, who currently plays off 4, has had a very
successful year winning the Founder's Bowl, the Pudsey Golf
Day Competition (for Children in Need), the Sydney Johnson KO
Cup and, to cap it all, the Kevin Palmer Order of Merit for
2011.
This should not be surprising when you read his account of an
incredible birdie three he achieved on Sunday 18 December at
the 8th hole. Raoul wrote:
"Playing with Graham May, Mick Coombes and Will
Ancell, I hooked my tee shot into the trees on the left of the
fairway. Up against a tree, my partner Graham suggested my
only option was to play back-handed to the fairway. So, I
decided to play the shot left-handed, turned my 9-iron over
and somehow played a high, handsome, 120 yard draw over the
bushes and bunkers to the front of the green - and then holed
the putt for a 3. Thank you very much!"
Please let the Office know if you can beat that. |

The annual
Christmas Lunch makes a welcome return
After two years when the Christmas Lunch has had to be
cancelled because of snow, it was
nice to see over 90 people attend this year's
function. Clay Morris laid on a splendid meal and as has
become custom, the diners were treated to background music
from the Hangleton Brass Band before joining in by singing
Christmas Carols. The draw for the Christmas Raffle followed
and this raised £327 for charity. |

Father Christmas visits
West Hove
West Hove’s annual Children’s Christmas Party has
again proved to be an overwhelming success. On Saturday 10
December, over 60 children were entertained by “Potty the
Pirate” and “Squawk the Parrot” and treated to tons
(colloq.) of party food laid on by our Catering Manager
Clay Morris. Of course, every child received a present from
Father Christmas and at the end of the party ‘Potty’ modelled
some animals, from balloons, for everyone. Special thanks go
to Grace Shepherd for organising the event once again and to
Jackie Pinker, Betty Laing,
Sue Gleeson, Pete Rodger (aka Father Christmas) and his
wife Gloria who all helped. Thanks too go to all those members
who helped sponsor this most popular of events.

The sun shines
for Richard Daughtrey at his drive-in
After last year's freezing conditions it was nice to see a
bright blue sky, and the temperature in the low teens, for
this popular annual event. The outgoing Captain, Pete Rodger,
'putted out' on the 18th hole before the new Club Captain,
Richard Daughtrey, made his spectacular appearance. Having the
honour to captain the Club during the 2012 London Olympics
inspired Richard to run (yes, run!) down the 14th hole with
his own Olympic torch! However, his choice of dress was the
subject of much friendly banter amongst some of the older past
captains - was he an athlete or a golfer - and how had his
hair grown so much since his election on Friday?
To allow Richard time to gather his breath, our Juniors' and
Seniors' Captains were invited to drive-in. The Juniors'
Captain, Greg Andrew, smacked his drive 244yards (or 243 yds 3
ft. as reported to the editor!) whilst the left-handed
Seniors' Captain, John Pheasey, achieved a very creditable 200
yards on his least favourite hole. Suitably refreshed,
Richard then tapped his drive a mere 157 yards.
Richard then treated everyone present with a complimentary
drink before enjoying one of Clay Morris' splendid Sunday
lunches with his family and friends.

At tonight's packed AGM Richard
Daughtrey was elected as Club Captain for 2011/12
Michael Phillpot, the Club President, chaired tonight’s packed Annual
General Meeting which was held in the Keith Haste Suite.
Richard Daughtrey was formally elected as the 2011/12 Club
Captain with John Godley as his Vice-Captain. Dave Goldsmith
was then elected to a vacancy on the Golf Committee.
The retiring Club Captain, Pete Rodger, presented a cheque for
£3,524.89 to Richard Lintott, Chairman of Leo House (Pete's chosen
charity), and an additional £300
was given to the Club's Junior Section. Richard, accompanied
by his wife Angie, thanked the Members for having raised
nearly £11k for them during the past two years.
Richard Daughtrey
has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support as his charity for his
year in office. It was founded in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan
and has grown to become the largest cancer care and support
charity in the UK. Their local Fundraising
Manager, Rachel David, made an interesting presentation to the assembly.
The Club's new Rules and Bye-Laws were accepted unanimously.

Steve Heath and CAE UK plc help
raise £540 for charity
CAE UK plc, a world-leading provider of aviation training
services, very kindly agreed to sponsor a new charity golf
competition at West Hove and generously donated prizes for the
top ten scorers. The event took place on Saturday in
gloriously warm weather and the first prize, a fantastic
hour-long Aircraft Simulation Session for two with a fully
qualified instructor, was won by James Da Costa with a
remarkable 48 points! The company also provided a surprise
prize for the worst scorer (a golf lesson with our Head
Professional Graeme Crompton), but we won't name him.
West Hove member Steve Heath, an employee of CAE UK plc, has
thanked the Club (and the 102 members who competed) for
raising a fabulous £540 for the company's two charities,
Cancer Research UK and St Catherine's Hospice. Steve, and some
of his colleagues, will be running in the Brighton
Half-Marathon on 19 February next year to raise further funds. |

The
English Golf Union (EGU) and
the English Women's Golf Association (EWGA) merge
After two years of consultation and discussion, the
organisations running men's and women's amateur golf in
England are to merge after delegates voted overwhelmingly in
favour of the proposal.
The proposed merger of the EGU and the EWGA was
approved yesterday at simultaneous general meetings of both
organisations. From Sunday 1 January 2012 a new single
governing body called 'England Golf' will take over the
duties of the EGU and EWGA.
This momentous decision was immediately hailed as a
triumph for golf and a vital step forward for the game. The
merger will hopefully create a new era and rid golf of its
sometimes sexist and elitist image.

Union's website.

The BBC 'Children
in Need' Appeal
On 8 November, the Club's General Manager, Gary Salt, gave
notice that our Head Professional, Graeme Crompton, would be
organising a new 'Pudsey Golf Day' on Saturday 12 November to
raise funds for the BBC's 'Children in Need' charity.
This 'Pudsey' competition comprised a "Tombstone" competition
where Members placed their marker on the fairway at the point
that their golf-ball reached when achieving their net
level-par score. The winner was the person whose marker was furthest up the
course and this year it was won by Raoul Ellis who reached
just 30 yards short of the 2nd green (i.e. his 20th hole).
Raoul won a Taylor Made Rossa putter, generously donated by
Graeme Crompton - but the real winner was the BBC 'Children in
Need' Appeal as they will be receiving a fantastic £520.
Both Graeme and Gary tender their sincere thanks to all those
Members who supported this event. We hope this will become a
regular annual event.

The new Ladies'
Captain, Marian Shepherd,
drove-in today
Following recent tradition, the outgoing Ladies' Captain, Rita
Hedderman, holed out on the eighteenth green before the new
Ladies' Captain, Marian Shepherd, drove-in. This is
Marian's second captaincy, but her first drive-in as this was
not a feature of her 1980/81 captaincy. After a quick swig, or
two, of the 'hard stuff' (after all, it was her birthday
today) Marian arrowed her drive 138 yards 2 feet. The
customary draw to determine the distance of her drive raised
over £140 for Marian's charity, the National Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

John Manville raises over £2,500
An interesting story came to light at the Seniors' AGM
yesterday. One of the older Members, John Manville, has been a
cycling enthusiast for most of his life. This is borne out by
him being the only regular golfer at West Hove who arrives for
golf on a cycle. So, when he saw an advert earlier this year
seeking people to join a charity bike-ride from London to
Paris he jumped at the idea. Despite it taking place during
his 55th wedding anniversary, 76 year-old John accompanied
another 65 riders and completed the four day trip of over
470km. In doing so, he raised over £2,500 for the Alzheimer's
Charity and he would like to thank in particular all of the
Seniors and the 'Saturday morning golfers' who contributed
very generously. Unlike the other riders who then got back to
England by train, John cycled another 290km to his second home
near Dieppe! Very many congratulations John (and happy
anniversary Wilma!). |

New Rules and Bye-Laws
At the behest of the Club Captain, Pete Rodger, a Rules Working
Party was created in March 2011 to consider what changes were
needed to our Rules. After much deliberation the Working Party submitted
their proposals to the Golf Committee and the Board, and both
of these bodies have now unanimously agreed to the changes. In
accordance with (old) Rule 31, the new Rules now have 'immediate
effect', but they will be submitted to this year's Annual
General Meeting for the approval of the Members.
Details of the
changes, and the new Rules themselves, will be posted in the
Clubhouse. For legal reasons the new Rules have been split
into two parts - rules and bye-laws - as can be seen by

The Ladies' and
Seniors' Annual General Meetings
The
Ladies' held their AGM yesterday and the Club is pleased to
report that Marian Shepherd was elected as the Ladies' Captain
for the second time. She first held office in 1980/1 when she
was the Club's Ladies' Champion for the third time. Two new
committee members were also elected, Julia Edwards (who was
the Ladies' Captain in 2004/5) and Liz Steeden. Marian's
drive-in will take place next Tuesday, 8 November, at 2.00pm.
Over 40 Seniors
attended today's Seniors' AGM when John Pheasey was elected
the Seniors' Captain for 2011/12. Colin Mills was elected as
the Seniors' Vice-Captain, so next year he will follow his
brothers who have already been Seniors' Captain - Brian in
1999/2000 and Peter in 2008/09. John's ceremonial drive-in
will take place on Sunday 29 November 2011. |

The
"Rules of Golf" and the "Unified
Handicapping System"
The R&A
and the United States Golf Association (USGA) have announced
the publication of the new "Rules of Golf" for 2012-15.
Following a four-year review, nine of the 34 playing Rules
have been amended and a new Appendix IV added. The 32nd
edition of the rules will come into effect worldwide from
Sunday 1st January 2012.
Most of the changes have been introduced to improve clarity
and to ensure penalties are proportionate. Members should be
able to obtain their own FREE copy of the rules from the
Clubhouse over the next few months, but in the meantime
further information can be obtained by visiting the R&A’s
website
(please click
here).
Like the R&A, the
Council of National Golf Unions (much better known as CONGU®)
will also be
introducing new
rules and procedures from Sunday 1st January 2012. CONGU
administers the "Unified Handicapping System" (UHS),
the only
official handicap system for golfers resident in Great Britain
and Ireland. They will be launching their new manual soon and
are currently updating their website
(please click here)
to coincide
with the above matters. Our 'Match & Handicap' team will keep
Members advised of the changes in due course. |

just misses out in a 'Club of the

On Wednesday evening the Club's General Manager, Gary Salt,
attended the Amex Community Stadium at Falmer where the 2011
Brighton & Hove City Council Sport & Physical Activity Awards
were presented. Over 300 attended the function in the BUPA
Lounge and the Council presented many awards in addition to
announcing the two torch bearers for the Olympic Flame when it
is carried through the city.
West Hove had been
nominated in the 'TAKEPART Club of the Year' category and
reached the final short-list of three. Unfortunately we were
not announced as the winners but Gary was presented with a
"Highly Commended" certificate on behalf of the Club -

The Centenary
Mixed Trophy proves popular...
Eighteen couples competed in yesterday's event where the
format was a combined Stableford points total. Like last

year the inaugural event was held in June! This year's worthy
winners were Club Captain Pete Rodger and Sue Gleeson who
amassed a very creditable 70 points. Mick and Betty Laing were
the runners-up on 68. All the competitors enjoyed a post-match
evening meal where the prizes were awarded and a vote of
thanks given to Jan Seabrook for organising the event.

John Vinicombe
1929 - 2011
|
John Vinicombe
It
is with great sadness that the Club has to report that John
Vinicombe passed away last night in a Hove nursing home, aged 82.
Born in Ealing, London, in 1929, he was a Member at West Hove
for many years and will be remembered throughout Sussex, and
beyond, as the Evening Argus' chief reporter on the exploits
of Brighton & Hove Albion FC.
In 1961 he started his regular golf column in the Argus, which
continued for 50 years. He was the most respected
sports-writer in Sussex for decades and will be missed by
everyone in the sporting world. Our thoughts at this sad time
are with his family and friends.
John was very supportive of West Hove GC and we were most
fortunate to have employed him to write "The History of
West Hove Golf Club 1910-2010" during our Centenary year
2010. The Club has lost a good friend and a great supporter.
Details of the funeral arrangements, when known, will be
published in the Clubhouse and on this website.
UPDATE 13 October
2011 -
There will be a funeral service for family and close friends
at the North Chapel, Woodvale Crematorium, Lewes Road,
Brighton at 1.30pm on Wednesday 19 October 2011 followed by a
celebration of his life at Brighton & Hove Golf Club from
2.30pm. Family flowers only - but cheque donations to "Cancer
Research UK" are welcome and should be sent to c/o Caring Lady
Funeral Director, 38 Blatchington Road, Hove.

News of two
further social functions
The Men's Dinner - This year's Men's Dinner has "sold
out", so the Clubhouse should be heaving on Friday 21 October
when the after-dinner speaker will be Adger Brown, one of the
South's leading and most sought after mainstream comedians.
Club Captain Pete Rodger tenders his apologies to those who
are now unable to attend - book early next time!
The Children's
Christmas Party - This most popular event is being held
this year on Saturday 10 December and details will be
published shortly. In the meantime, one of the organisers,
Grace Shepherd, has announced that she has organised a raffle
to help fund the event. She is delighted to report that Club
Member Steve Thatcher (of
R. P. Meats) has very kindly donated
a fantastic first prize. It is a voucher to the value of £150
to be spent on any meat of your choice! Just what you'd like
to win before the festive season. Tickets have gone on sale
from today, so make sure you buy yours from the bar during
this month. The draw will take place on Saturday 5 November.
Tickets cost £1 - but why not support this great event by
spending £5 for 6 tickets? Good luck. |

Some recent
news on the social front
West Hove GC has close associations with Brighton & Hove
Albion FC and is a 'Friend of the Albion'. Many of our Members
are privileged season ticket holders, but others were unable
to visit the Amex Stadium last Wednesday and Friday to support
their team as both games were a 'sell-out'. The Club's General
Manger, Gary Salt, therefore laid on two special bar promotion
evenings so that Members could watch the Sky Sports Exclusive
TV coverage of the games, whilst enjoying discounted beer
prices. During Friday's game against Leeds United, the Albion
made a spirited comeback from 0-2 down and something most
unusual happened when the Albion scored one of their goals.

Last night, the Club hosted another very successful quiz-night
when nine teams of six battled it out to find the winning
team. Special thanks go to quiz-master Dave Power for his
excellent organisation - and to Gary Salt who assisted.
Most of those present also enjoyed a sumptuous platter
of Chinese, Indian and 'Tex Mex' food provided by our Catering
Manager, Clay Morris, and his team.

West Hove's
Juniors compete in the semi-final of the
Alan Covey Cup
The Alan Covey Cup is the SCGU's inter-Club Foursomes
Knockout competition, off handicap, for junior golfers from
Sussex Clubs, and for the first time in West Hove's history
our Juniors reached the semi-finals.
Whilst our team competed against Worthing at Mid Sussex GC, we
were delighted to host the other semi-final between Singing
Hills and Hill Barn. Unfortunately Worthing GC proved too
strong for us and our team lost 1-3. However, Ken Stafford the
Club's Junior Organiser, Gary Salt our General Manager and
Club Captain Pete Rodger are all very proud of the team's
achievements. Our team yesterday was as follows:
Greg Andrew & Jack Smith - lost 3&2
Frankie Ingham & Jorge Osborne - lost 3&2
Sam Cissell & Joe Morley - won 2 up
Alex Jago & Tyler Hounsome - lost 1 down |

Stacey
Rodger performs well in the 2011 County Finals
The English Counties'

GC, Essex and Stacey Rodger has been representing Sussex, one
of the six county finalists. The competition is very tough
with potentially ten games having to be played over five days
by each team member and against international players.
Over the first three days Stacey has performed very well
having won two out of three of her foursomes matches and all
three of her singles games. There are two further days of
competition and for those who want to follow Sussex's progress
please visit one of the following websites:

A report from the Cissbury Salver - held on 3 & 4 September
2011
This prestigious scratch team event is held annually at
Worthing GC and our 2011 team of six was captained by Mark
Gully. He reported that the format was different this year
with a 36-hole foursomes stableford on the Saturday with all 3
pairs' scores counting. The top 4 Clubs qualified for the
Salver, the next 4 for the Plate and the remainder of the
field qualified for the Parsons jug.
Our team
qualified for the Plate and in Sunday morning's semi-final we
beat Ham Manor GC 2-1. Russell Newland and Jay Stally
won 4 & 3, Steve Nielsen and Mark Gully won 7 & 6, but Jonny
Ingram and Dan Milligan lost 4 & 3. In the afternoon
final of the Plate we lost to the Sussex
under-18 county team 3-0, with Russell and Jay losing 5 & 4,
Jonny and Dan losing 4 & 3, and Steve and Mark losing 2 & 1.
It was apparently a really good weekend. Oh, and the
inevitable winners of the Cissbury Salver were
Worthing GC (for the eighth year running). |

hope that the fixture is reinstated next year. |

Stacey Rodger
is the new Sussex Ladies' Champion
The Club is absolutely delighted to report that West Hove's
Stacey Rodger is the new Sussex County Ladies' Champion.
The Championship was played over the past three days at West
Sussex GC with a 36-hole pre-qualifying stroke-play event on
Tuesday. The top 16 players then went on to contest for
the Championship in a knock-out matchplay event, the first
round and quarter-finals being played yesterday and the
semi-finals and final being played today. Stacey's progress was
as follows:
|
Tuesday |
Stacey shot
two steady rounds of 76 which meant she finished in sixth
place, thus qualifying for the matchplay event. |
|
Wednesday |
In the first
round of the knock-out matchplay event, Stacey beat Emma
Morgan (Crowborough) 6 & 5 and then in the afternoon
quarter-finals she beat Hope Beland (Royal Eastbourne) 3 &
2. |
|
Thursday |
In this
morning's semi-final, Stacey beat Paula Carver (Worthing)
6 & 5 and then in the afternoon final she beat her friend
Tiffany Hewetson (East Brighton) 5 & 4. |
This is the
second time that Stacey has won this prestigious Sussex title,
the first coming some five years ago before her golf
scholarship in the USA. Obviously the whole family (including
her father Stuart and her uncle Club Captain, Pete), are very
proud of her achievement. It is even more remarkable that she has
achieved such success as she has had to play for the past two
months with her right wrist strapped-up following ligament
injury.
This result has moved her up from 25th to 18th in the EWGA Order of Merit and has strengthened her
resolve to have a go at turning professional. She intends to
enter the Tour School at La Manga in Spain in January 2012,
where nine rounds of golf will determine her destiny. Good
luck Stacey. |

Jackie and
Terry Pinker win the 2011 'Mixed Away' competition in France
West Hove's 'Mixed Away' competition returned to the Chateau
du Vaudichon, at St. Saens in France, where nine West Hove
couples arrived last Friday for five day's of golf. Apart from
a storm last night, the weather was hot and sunny but as usual
at this venue the rough proved difficult for all but the
better players. This year's worthy winners of the 'Ron & Sue
Baker Trophy' were Terry & Jackie Pinker with a net score of
67.8 with Mick & Betty Laing finishing second on 69. Everybody
had a thoroughly enjoyable long weekend with great food and
company.

GC in August, so if you are interested in joining the group
please feel free to contact the organiser Michael Whitty. |

West Hove lose
out in the B&DGS Mixed Cup
The final B&DGS event of the year was hosted by East Brighton
GC yesterday in dry but windy conditions. In the first morning
match West Hove just beat the home club by 3-2, with the
second match between Dyke GC and Brighton & Hove GC seeing the
Dyke go through 3.5-1.5.
In the afternoon shoot-out between West Hove and the Dyke we
lost 4-1 with Pete Rodger and Stacey Rodger winning our only
point. |

Stacey Rodger
makes 'the cut' in the 2011 Ladies' British Open
In today's second round of the 2011 Ladies' British Open
Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Royal Ashdown GC, West
Hove's Stacey Rodger shot a six over par 78 to finish in a
very creditable 19th position to secure her place in
tomorrow's 36-hole event. She is just six shots behind the
leader, Charlotte Thomas (Singapore), and the difficulty of
the course is apparent by the fact that not one lady has yet
broken par and one of yesterday's leaders, on level-par 72,
today shot an 84 to just qualify! Further, today's CSS
was reputed to be 77!

Wednesday 17 August 2011 |
Stacey Rodger
competes in her toughest event to date
Today sees the first day of the
2011 Ladies' British Open
Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Royal Ashdown GC. Stacey
will be competing (tee time 10.26am) against 112 of
the best female amateurs from Britain and abroad and will
play 18 holes today and tomorrow in an attempt to make the
top 40 and qualify for the final 36 holes on Friday.
Spectators are welcome and both admission and car parking
are free. We will report Stacey's progress here.
Update 6.00pm 17 August
Not all first round scores are in yet, but Stacey is
currently in equal 28th place with a 4-over par 76. This
included two birdies, three bogeys and, unfortunately, a
triple bogey on the last hole! Let's hope she keeps such
scores off her card in tomorrow's second round. The leaders
are currently on level par 72.

West Hove has
again hosted
The Sussex Professional Championship
The Club has once again been delighted, and honoured, to host
the Sussex Professional Golfers' Union Championship. Forty-two
Sussex professional golfers competed over the past two days in
their most prestigious stroke-play event, with the top 28
players from yesterday battling it out today for the Bill
Watts Trophy and the SPGU Challenge Cup.
Yesterday's leading contenders maintained their form today
with Darren Mustchin (West Chiltington) holding on to his lead
to become the 2011 champion. Darren scored a level par 140 (68
& 72) to pip his playing partner Jason Partridge (Piltdown) by
one shot. Third place went to last year's champion Marcus
Groombridge (Burgess Hill) with 142. |

Two West Hove
ladies win the Brighton & Hove GC Ladies' Open
Congratulations go to Lynn Stoner, the Club's House Manager,
and Joan Sherrington (aka Sherry) for winning the Brighton &
Hove GC Ladies' Open last week. The format was 'Greensomes
Stableford' and they scored 39 points to clinch the title.
Lynn has only been playing seriously for about a year but
Sherry has been playing a little longer (having been the
Ladies' Captain in 1983/84!). Congratulations. |

Print Plate today
Our team of senior
SCGU 'County Card' holders today competed in the
quarter-finals of the

Gary Salt reports, this was far from being a disgrace as the
Nevill are the current 'Cyril Blake' cup-holders and the
overall score does not show how close our team were to winning
- see below:
Raoul Ellis &
Alan Hopping lost 2 & 1
Terry Pinker &
Don Shepherd (Snr.) lost 2 & 1
Tim Ingram &
Pete Rodger lost 2 & 1, and lastly
Michael Coombes

Roy Austin
scores 9 Stableford points in just two holes! Read on...
In today's Seniors' "Stan Smith Greensomes" competition, Roy
Austin achieved an incredible 9 Stableford points in just two
holes. With playing partner, Derek Chaplin, they chipped in
for a birdie on the 16th hole (for 4 points) before Roy scored
the first 'ace' of his 21-year golfing career (for 5 points!)
with a 4-iron at the 207-yard 17th hole, which helped them to
win the competition. The irony was that neither Roy or Derek,
nor their playing partners Brian Holmes and Denny Horner,
actually saw the ball go in the hole! Perhaps the inspiration
for Roy's achievement came from his visit to 'The Open' at
Royal St. Georges a few weeks ago when he witnessed Tom
Watson's 'ace' at the sixth hole. Afterwards, in the
Clubhouse, veteran Ken Dowling pointed out that he had been
playing for 56 years and was still seeking his first
hole-in-one. Further, after treating those present with a
celebratory drink, Roy was presented with a certificate from
General Manager, Gary Salt, which will be treasured alongside
the 'lucky' ball. (Keep trying Ken) |

Our Juniors'
Captain, Ryan Stafford, won today's 2011 West Hove Junior
Championship
Having been runner-up last year, Ryan Stafford won today's
West Hove Junior Championship in breezy conditions with gross
rounds of 80 & 75, for a total of 155 and a winning margin of
three shots. The net prize-winner was Emmet O'Faolain with a
5-under-par total of 135 (67 + 68). Twenty Juniors competed
and they deserve great praise for (a) completing the 36 holes
in breezy conditions, (b) finishing their rounds without a
single nil return, and (c) for turning up to the prize
presentation smartly dressed. They are a credit to their Club.
The Club Captain, Pete Rodger, presented the prizes assisted
by the Junior Organiser, Ken Stafford.

titles. Firstly, on Monday 1 August she competed for the
SCLGA's 'Beatrice Murray Prize' at Ham Manor GC. This is a
County Order of Merit and Daily Telegraph Qualifier event and
Sophie won the scratch competition (and a very helpful £75
voucher!). Yesterday, at Stoneham GC in Hampshire, Sophie
played in the EWGA's South Region Girls' Championship and
excelled to win the 36-hole Handicap Championship with a score
of 136 (68 + 68). Many congratulations Sophie. |

Sign up for a
chance to play against
Golf du Sart in September
For the past three years West Hove has held an annual
competition against Golf du Sart, from Lille in northern
France, and this year we will be hosting our French guests
between 9th & 11th September. We anticipate that they will
bring a team of ten golfers and Match & Handicap will soon be
posting a notice in the foyer seeking players from West Hove.
This year's team will be selected by Club Captain, Pete
Rodger, and it is understood that preference will be given to
those members who have not been involved in the previous
exchanges between the two Clubs. There will be two
competitions, one on the Saturday and the other on the Sunday,
so any member keen to be considered should watch the
notice-board over the next week when further details of the
golf and social functions will be available. |

Dave Friend
achieves his second 'hole-in-one'
In today's Adastra Cup, six-handicapper Dave Friend achieved
his second 'hole-in-one'. Playing alongside Paul & Geoff Bibby,
and Richard Brand, he used a seven-iron at the 156-yard par-3 7th hole.
His first 'ace' was achieved over 20 years ago at the par-3
15th hole over West Hove's old course. Remarkably, he was also
playing alongside Paul Bibby, but this time in the final of
the Winter Four-ball (which they won) against Martin Galway
and Colin Steel. According to custom, Dave bought a round of
drinks for the members present. Congratulations. |

West Hove GC
retain second place in the 2011 B&DGS rankings
The penultimate 2011 competitions in the Brighton &
District Golfing Society's calendar took place today at East
Brighton GC in benign conditions (i.e. it wasn't windy!). The
Captains' Putter, Professionals' Cup, Secretaries' Cup and
Presidents' Salver were all played for with the prizes being
presented after a hearty dinner.
The Captains' Putter, a team event for the past six Club
Captains (with the best five Stableford scores to count) was
won convincingly by the home Club with 191 points (that is an
average of over 38 points each!). West Hove were second - and
the team scores were as follows;
|
East Brighton
GC |
191 points |
|
West Hove GC |
166
|
|
Brighton &
Hove GC |
162 |
|
Dyke GC |
159 |
The West Hove
team scored as follows; Pete Rodger 38 pts, Mike Whitty 35
pts, Kevin Heanen 33 pts, Gordon Eaton 32 pts, Andy
Macgregor-Boyle 28 pts and Dennis Baker 24 pts.
The
Professional's Cup was won by Mark Stuart-William (Dyke) with
a fantastic new course record of 64 from West Hove's Graeme
Crompton who came second with a very creditable 69. For the
record, Graeme learnt to play golf at East Brighton where his brother, Paul, is the current Club Captain. East Brighton won the Secretary's
Cup with 36 points and the Presidents' Salver was won again by
Tom Grogan with 34 points.
The rankings
for the 2011 Victor Ludorum Trophy now stand as follows;
|
The Dyke GC |
51 |
|
West Hove GC |
48 |
|
Brighton &
Hove GC |
33.5 |
|
East Brighton
GC |
26.5 |
This means that
the final B&DGS event, the Mixed Cup which takes place on 21
August at East Brighton GC, will determine whether the Dyke or
West Hove become the 2011 team winners. |

Another SCGU success
for West Hove GC - this time for our Juniors' Section
Ken Stafford, the Club's Junior Organiser and Gary Salt,
General Manager, are delighted to report that our Junior
golfers won yesterday's quarter-final of the Covey Cup to
reach the semi-finals for the first time. The Covey Cup is the
SCGU's inter-Club Foursomes Knockout competition, off
handicap, for junior golfers from Sussex Clubs.
This success was achieved despite many changes having to be
made because of holidays and we now eagerly await to see who
we meet in the semi-finals.
In yesterday's home match against Cooden Beach GC, we won 2½ -
1½ with the following pairings;
Ryan Stafford (Captain) & Jack Smith
Frankie Ingham & Jorge Osborne
Alex Jago & Aston Allan Foord
Sam Cissell & Joe Morley
We wish the team every success in the semi-final. |

Two West Hove
members competed in today's SCGU Colts Championship
Dan Milligan and Jonny Ingram competed in today's Sussex
County Golf Union's Colts Championship at Mannings Heath GC.
This prestigious event determines the under-21 year-old
champion Sussex golfer. Jonny, the reigning champion from
2010, teed off on the Kingfisher course at the unearthly hour
of 7.30am, but it did not bother him as he scored an amazing
64, or 6-under par, to create a new course record. In the
afternoon, over the more difficult Waterfall course, he shot a
2-over par 74 to finish second to Jamie Chapman (Dyke GC) by
just one shot. Their respective scores were;
Jamie Chapman - 67 +70 = 137 (5 under par)
Jonny Ingram - 64 + 74 = 138 (4 under par)

Shirley Hunt's
team wins today's West Hove GC Pro-Am
Today's Pro-Am was held in benign conditions and the golf
course was playing at its best. Eighteen teams of four
competed, with the usual shotgun start taking place at noon.
Lynx Ladies, the only ladies team, won with a very creditable
score of 21-under par - they were made up of three West Hove
lady members, Shirley Hunt, Angie Whitty and Grace Shepherd
together with PGA Professional Alan Tyson from Battle GC.
Not to be outdone, Shirley's husband Michael partnered Jason Partridge,
the PGA Professional from Piltdown GC, who won the Professional's
event with a fabulous gross 66 (4-under-par).
All of the participants enjoyed an excellent meal and then
competed again in the post-golf auction to raise over £2,100 for the
Club Captain Pete Rodger's nominated charity, Leo House at Home.

West Hove's
'Over 55' team has reached the quarter-finals of the Gilbert
Print Plate
Our team of senior
SCGU 'County Card' holders today competed in the 3rd
round of the
'Gilbert Print
Plate' and beat Peacehaven GC 4-0 to secure a place in the
quarter-finals. This was despite our team having to 'give
away' 27 shots to the opposition. The winning pairs were as
follows:
Raoul Ellis &
Alan Hopping, who won 6 & 5
Terry Pinker &
Don Shepherd, who won 5 & 4
Gordon Eaton &
Pete Rodger, who won 7 & 5 and lastly
Michael Coombes
& Richard Knight, who won 3 & 1.
The 4th round,
or quarter-final, will be played on Monday 8 August 2011,

West Hove's Alexander Jago won today's Junior Open
This SCGU 'Junior County Order of Merit' competition
attracted 45 players from 18 golf clubs from as far away as
South Herts GC (home of the Vardon grip). In unseasonably
squally conditions, it was won by 13 handicapper Alex Jago who
shot an excellent gross 79, just pipping last year's champion
Matt Greenfield (Pyecombe GC) and Tom Curry (West
Chiltington). The net prize-winner was Miss Polina Zotova
(Cottesmore GC) who scored a net 65 playing off of 33.
Once again, special thanks are due to West Hove's Club
President, Michael Phillpot, and Junior Organiser Ken
Stafford, for organising this increasingly successful
competition. Michael and Ken were both grateful to the
participants who had forfeited the opportunity to watch the
last day of "The Open" on television. Today's winners (shown
below) received their prizes from West Hove's Club Captain
Pete Rodger.

It's déjà vu at West Hove's 'Club Championship'
In today's Club Championship Jonny Ingram shot two rounds of
68 to retain the title that he won for the first time last
year - and with exactly the same scores! In the morning
session Jonny's score was matched by a four-time former
champion,
Steve Nielsen, with Russell Newland in third place with an
excellent 71 (net 65) which meant he led the field in the Nick
O'Byrne Trophy for the best 36-hole net score. Interestingly,
holes 6,12 and 16 (being stroke indices 1 to 3) lived up to
their reputation by being the only holes not to yield to a
birdie.
In the afternoon Jonny maintained his consistency with another
fine 68 which included three bogies and five birdies, the last
of which fittingly occurred at the 617 yard par-5 eighteenth
hole in front of the assembled crowd. Jonny won by a
convincing seven shots from Russell who had maintained his
good form with a gross 72 whilst the rest of the field fell
away. This was more than sufficient for Russell to win the
Nick O'Byrne Trophy from Lee Silsby who did
himself proud with two 2-under par rounds of 68.

Stacey Rodger breaks the
course record at Brighton & Hove GC
Don Weston, the Secretary of the Brighton & District Golfing
Society (BDGS), has reported that "records tumbled" at the
BDGS Championship held at Brighton & Hove GC yesterday.
Stacey Rodger (West Hove) won the Ladies' Championship on 145
(75 & 70), the latter score being a new ladies' course record.
Remarkably, this was Stacey's sixth win in the last seven
years!
In the Men's Championship, Ross Gilbert of the home Club shot
a fabulous 130 (68 & 62), his second round score being a new
men's course record. Jonny Ingram was a creditable second in
this event (for the third year running) and our team's scores were as follows:
Jonny Ingram 136 (69 & 67)
Mark Gully 145 (75 & 70)
Tony Humphrey 148 (73 & 75)
Damon Raikes 161 (79 & 82)
This meant that our 'team' total of 590 placed us third, as
follows:
The Dyke GC - 573
Brighton & Hove GC - 579
West Hove GC - 590
East Brighton GC - 616
The Juniors' Championship was won by Ben Roberts (Dyke GC) on
144 (73 & 71) with our Junior's Captain, Adam Hatcher,
finishing a close second on 147 (75 & 72).
The current scores in the on-going 2011 Victor Ludorum
competition are now:
The Dyke 47 points: West Hove 41: Brighton & Hove 27.5 and
East Brighton 13.5 points.

Association of
James Braid Courses
Two new Clubs have joined the AoJBC, one in Kelso,
Scotland and one in Fulford Heath, Birmingham, plus Maesdu GC
in Wales have reduced their green fee rate.
This brings to 113, the number of golf clubs belonging to the Association of James Braid
Courses, which are predominately spread across the UK, where
you are able to play at a discounted green-fee. (When we first
reported this benefit, last November, there were just 51 such
clubs in the UK, with 4 in Eire and 1 in the USA.)
As there are strict rules regarding the booking of tee-times
at these other clubs, it is important that you follow
the correct procedures.

Further to the news report dated 16 May, our
'over-55' team of SCGU 'County Card' holders today competed in
the 2nd round of the
'Gilbert Print
Plate'. On the hottest day of the year so far, they had a
comfortable 4 - 0 win at home against Sweetwoods Park GC. The
winning pairs were:
Raoul Ellis &
Maurice Grange, who won 5&4
Terry Pinker &
Don Shepherd, who won 6&5
Gordon Eaton &
Pete Rodger, who won 4&3 and lastly

Former Club Champion Tom
Coulson starts well in the "Open Qualifying"
Tom Coulson, five-time former West Hove Champion, who now
plays out of Crowborough Beacon GC, started his quest to
qualify for the 2011 Open in excellent fashion. Playing at
East Sussex National last Monday in a field of 99 players, Tom
shot an excellent 69 to finish third. He now moves on to play
in the 'Local Final Qualifying' which is a 36-hole event to be
played at Littlestone GC on Tuesday 28 June when one of his
competitors that day will be Jose Maria Olazabal.
Update
Wednesday 29 June 2011
In yesterday's storm interrupted qualifying at Littlestone GC,
Tom Coulson failed to achieve his dream finishing with a
12-over-par 154 (72 & 82). Worthing's Jack Bartlett just
failed to qualify with his fabulous 3-under-par 139 which
included the day's lowest round of 67.

West Hove's
Sophie Kennard wins the SCLGA Junior Girls' Championship
Earlier this month, 16 year-old Sophie Kennard was delighted
to win the Sussex County Ladies' Golf Association Junior
Girls' Championship. Sophie plays off an eight handicap, but
this was a scratch competition over 36 holes. It was played at
Cottesmore GC and her aggregate score of 165 gave her a three
shot advantage over her nearest competitor. It was quite a day
for Sophie as she had to come from behind to win after a poor
first round, but she also won the longest drive in the morning
and to cap it all the nearest-the-pin prize in the afternoon.
Sophie's achievements were fully reported in today's 'Youth in
Action' supplement from today's Argus newspaper. Many
congratulations. |

Norman Milburn brings
the Sussex Golf Captains to West Hove
On Friday 17 June, West Hove GC was delighted to host the
Society of Sussex Golf Captains' "Captain's Day". This was
particularly significant as for the first time a past captain
from West Hove, Norman Milburn, had the honour of being the
Sussex Captain.
Over 50 other past
Captains attended and tried their best to enjoy the golf
albeit the weather was wet and windy. Both Norman and the
Sussex Golf Captains' secretary, Mark Terry, said how great
the catering was and thanked West Hove for organising the
event. At the end of the day Norman handed over more than £340
to Angela Goldsmith (wife of member David) for the 'Guide Dogs

News stories
from the past week or so...
Exclusive Trophy & Plate - Following our defeat at
Cowdray Park GC on 21 May in the Trophy competition, our team
was drawn to play away to Hill Barn GC in the 'Plate' on
Saturday 11 June. Four of the original team were away on a
golfing holiday so
Brian
Murphy, Phil Quinlan, Ken Stafford and David Menzies joined
Club Captain Pete Rodger, Andy Page, Wayne Hatcher and Dave
Goldsmith to make up the team. Unfortunately
the team were beaten 4 - 0.
The PAV i.t. Trophy
-
Also on 11 June, our scratch team was drawn to play away
at Lewes GC in the 3rd round of this prestigious competition.
These days Lewes have a strong team and we were well beaten 9
- 3. One of the key features of the match was an 'ace' by
Lewes' Lawrie Tremlett
who holed his tee shot at the 131 yard 4th-hole. In the
morning foursomes we could only manage a half point from the
pairing of Jonny Ingram & Lewis Jackson and in the afternoon
Jonny gained another 'half' in his match against Lawrie. Our
only winners on the day were Dan Milligan and Gary Salt who
both won their singles matches 4 & 3.
The B&DGS
Wentworth Smith Trophy
On Sunday 12 June the Club hosted the Brighton & District
Golfing Society's Wentworth Smith Trophy. Fortunately, our
losing streak ended and West Hove won the competition with 167
points. Our winning team was Tony Jefferson with 34 points,
Keith Fender 34, Ian Large 33, Martin Augier 33 and Nigel
James 33. Two past West Hove Members featured for the other
Clubs - Mark Pollington (East Brighton) winning both the
scratch and net trophies and Neville Hudson (Dyke) being the
runner-up in the net competition. West Hove are now just one
point behind The Dyke in the Victor Ludorum Trophy.

West
Hove's Juniors continue to make progress
Further to our news story dated 3 May 2011, the Club's Juniors
have made further steady progress. In today's second round of
the Alan Covey Cup we beat Ham Manor GC 3-1 in wet and windy
conditions. The winning pairs were
Greg Andrew & Jack
Smith, Tyler Hounsome & Robert Haggart, Jorge Osborne & Joe
Morley with Frankie Ingham & Alex Jago this time being the
unfortunate losers.
Last Friday, 3
June, West Hove hosted the Dockerills' Junior Brighton League
match between nine local teams. Ken Stafford, our Junior
Organiser, reported that this year the Club had entered
two teams. Our team of Alex Jago, Jorge Osborne, Aston
Allan-Foord and Ryan Mill scored 104 points to win the best
team prize and our other team of Greg Andrew, Sam Cissell,
Sophie Kennard and Robert Haggart scored 95 points to finish
in third place.
Ken was
impressed with both teams' scoring as conditions were not made
for golf as the wind was really gusting. Jorge Osborne played
particularly well to win the individual stableford prize with
41 points and Sam Cissell achieved 38 points. The Club wishes
Ken and our Junior teams all the very best in their
forthcoming matches. |

Graeme Crompton
wins with a record score
The Club's Head Professional, Graeme Crompton, won the Sussex
Professional Golfers' Union Alliance 3-ball team event at East
Brighton GC last Thursday. His team score of 67 points, being
the best 2 scores on each hole, was a record - it being the
lowest ever winning Stableford points total to win such an
event. It should be noted, however, that the conditions were
nearly unplayable with a very strong wind, but Graeme's win
could to some degree be attributed to playing on the course
where he learnt his golf and alongside two old friends from
Hollingbury GC, Stuart Neate and May Bailey. You can see a
photo of the winning team by visiting the SPGU's website -

West Hove GC
attracts 200 children at a football festival!
On Sunday 22nd May the Club's Head Professional, Graeme
Crompton, together with General Manager Gary Salt, Junior
Organiser Ken Stafford and Dan Milligan (the Club's Junior
Champion in 2007/8) set up and manned a stand at the Waterhall
Junior Football Festival.
Over 1,500 children took part in the football festival and
between 8am and 2pm the Club managed to get nearly 200 of them
to "have a go" at golf. For the younger children, the Club had
the oversized kids-friendly tri-golf equipment set up, but for
the older ones there was a large inflatable practice net
(kindly loaned free-of-charge by the Sussex Golf Partnership)
so that they could use real golf equipment and balls.
Please
Although the windy weather made
things difficult, particularly for the younger children using
plastic balls, the team from West Hove thoroughly enjoyed
themselves and managed to get all of the 'kids' hitting balls,
hopefully creating some further interest in our brilliant
sport. Gary Salt reported that Graeme was really good with the
children and had shown why he is one of the best coaches in
Sussex.
Leaflets regarding the Club's
junior coaching, and the upcoming summer 'golf camps', were
distributed and these look likely to be very popular once
again.
With the school summer
holidays fast approaching, all youngsters are therefore urged
to 'watch this space' for details of these forthcoming events. |

match against East Brighton 2½ - 2½ but proceeded to the final

Brighton & Hove 3 - 2.
In a closely

West Hove today beat
Cowdray Park GC in the second round of the PAV i.t. Trophy
In today's 2nd round, our scratch team beat Cowdray Park
8½ - 3½ after surprisingly losing the morning foursomes 2½ -
1½ in damp and chilly conditions . The afternoon singles
result (7 - 1) took place in warm sunshine and was highlighted
by debutant Jay Stally winning both his rounds despite
breaking his wedge from a difficult lie on the first hole.
Other key points included Jonny Ingram also winning his two
matches, Dan Milligan's big 7&6 win in the afternoon singles
and Lewis Jackson's return from college in America. The team
has now been drawn to play away at Lewes GC in the 3rd round
on Saturday 11 June 2011.
In another competition, a West Hove team lost to Cowdray
Park GC
In the new Sussex County Inter Club Handicap Matchplay
Championship (for The Exclusive Golf Trophy) our team of
golfers from handicap categories 2 and 3 played at Cowdray
Park GC today. Unlike the morning at West Hove, the weather
was warm and sunny all day but this didn't help our team who
were beaten 3 - 1 by a strong Cowdray Park side - one of their
players shooting a gross 33 on the back nine holes! The team,
managed by Brian Hazelgrove, will now play away to Hill Barn
GC in the Plate
competition on 11 June.

16 of this top quality championship. As luck would have it,
Stacey was then drawn to play Holly Clyburn of Woodhall Spa

Stacey Rodger
reaches the last 32 of the English Women's Amateur
Championship
The English Women's Amateur Championship is currently taking
place at West Sussex GC where West Hove's Stacey Rodger is
also a member. Over the past two days the ladies have played
in a stroke-play event and Stacey did very well to finish 25th
in a field of 58 to qualify for the knockout matchplay stage
of this prestigious competition. Teenager Georgia Hall shot a
superb six-under par 66 in her second round to lead the 32
qualifiers. Stacey has been drawn to play Shelby Smart of
Knowle GC and her progress will be recorded here - good luck
Stacey. |

West Hove GC
today won the Brighton & District Golfing Society's
Intermediate Cup
The second B&DGS event of the year, the Intermediate
Cup, took place today at The Dyke GC. In the morning West Hove
beat East Brighton 3½ - 1½ and The Dyke beat Brighton & Hove
(who went on to win the afternoon 'Plate').
Notably, Keith Fender and Phil Stempt were
dormie three down but fought back to secure a half.
We then beat The
Dyke 3½ - 1½ in the afternoon final, but
our team captain, Tim Ingram, reported that
this was a particularly hard fought affair with the games much
closer than the score would suggest.
This win was
particularly pleasing following last year's close-call, when
we lost in the final on count-back.

The good news - Jonny Ingram has
been chosen to play for the Sussex 1st Team
The Club is delighted to hear from Anup Vasant JP, the
Secretary of the Sussex County Golf Union, that our current
Club Champion, Jonny Ingram, has been selected to play for the
County's 1st Team. He is one of eight Sussex golfers
chosen to play in the league match against Surrey at the
Nevill GC on Sunday 22 May 2011. We wish him and the team the
very best of luck. |

The bad news - Thieves strike at
West Hove
The Club's General Manager, Gary Salt, has reported that the
Club suffered a break-in at about 11.40pm last Sunday evening.
Thanks to the Club's excellent security system, both the
police and our security patrol arrived at the scene within a
few minutes of the alarm being raised. Although there was
damage caused to some parts of the Clubhouse, the thieves
only managed to
get away with the contents of the cigarette vending machine. |

West
Hove's Juniors beat Ifield GC in the first round of the Alan
Covey Cup
On Sunday 1 May, our Juniors hosted a team from Ifield GC in
the first round of the Alan Covey Cup. This prestigious Sussex
County Golf Union competition is a team foursomes knockout
event for junior golfers. Each team comprises four pairs and
we were represented by
Ryan Stafford,
Greg Andrew, Frankie Ingham, Jack Smith, Tyler Hounsome, Alex
Jago, Robert Haggart and Aston Allen Foord. The match ended
all square at 2-2, so our 'nominated' pairing of Greg Andrew
and Jack Smith had to play a 'sudden death' play-off from the
first hole. Fortunately, they recorded a par to win and take
the team through to the second round. |

in Wales
Over the past two days Stacey has competed in the 2011 Welsh
Ladies Open Amateur Stroke- Play Championship at Tenby GC. She
had rounds of 77, 83 and 77 to finish in a tie for eighteenth
place, some twelve shots behind the winner, Charley Hull of
Woburn GC. |

Two West Hove
Ladies, Stacey Rodger and Sophie Kennard, make the news
Firstly, congratulations go to Stacey Rodger who finished
joint 8th (the joint 4th amateur) in the prestigious
Roehampton GC Gold Cup last Wednesday where she also won the
prize for the best morning round. Just twelve days earlier,
but this time representing her other Club, West Sussex, she
partnered Alice Barnes to win the Sussex County Ladies Golf
Association (SCLGA) Inter Club Scratch Knockout Foursomes over
three days at East Brighton GC.
Secondly, many
congratulations go to Sophie Kennard, who plays off 9, for
winning the scratch prize in the SCLGA Junior Girls Spring
Meeting at Chartham Park GC on 18 April 2011. On the front
nine she had a triple bogey but recovered her composure to
shoot just two over par on the last eight holes to record a
gross 81 - and the scratch prize. Interestingly, Stacey won
this event in 2006.

West Hove GC
won the 'Plate' at the Brighton & District Golfing Society's
Senior Cup
The first 2011 B&DGS event, the Senior Cup, took
place yesterday at Brighton & Hove GC. The competition
comprised five foursome matches between the host Club,
ourselves, East Brighton GC and the Dyke GC.
Yesterday morning's competition saw us drawn against the
hosts, Brighton & Hove GC, and their strong team, coupled with
'home' advantage, proved too much for our team which lost 1-4.
This meant we could not retain the Cup which we won last year.
However, in the afternoon 'Plate' competition we beat East
Brighton, whilst Brighton & Hove went on to win the Cup by
beating The Dyke 4-1. Our teams were as follows:
Jonny Ingram & Mark Gully - Lee Harding & Luke Giles - Tony
Humphrey & Jay Stally - Steve Nielsen & Raoul Ellis - Dan
Milligan & Simon Tiplady.
The other B&DGS events will take place throughout the summer
and West Hove GC is fortunate to be hosting the Junior Cup on
Sunday 22 May and the 'Wentworth Smith' on Sunday 12 June. |

West Hove Golf
Club's course as you've never seen it before
At last year's Men's Dinner the immediate Past Captain, Gordon
Eaton, donated a one-hour flying lesson in a 4-seater aircraft
as the main raffle prize. It was won by Chris Barker (another
Past Captain!) but unfortunately he has an aversion to flying!
Chris very kindly donated the prize back to Gordon's charity
and the prize was subsequently put up for auction at Gordon's
Farewell Party. Ironically, Gordon's wife Penny joined the
bidding and at a cost of £130 ended up winning the prize! That
neatly took care of Gordon's Christmas present from his wife
(!), but it also helped swell the funds of his charity.
The upshot of this
was that Gordon went for his flying lesson yesterday and
apparently he enjoyed it immensely. On the way back to the
airport, Gordon couldn't resist flying over West Hove where he
arranged for Penny, who bravely accompanied him, to take an
aerial photo of the golf course - as never been seen before.

President's Dinner took place tonight at the Clubhouse
when 20 West Hove Past Captains celebrated the recent
appointment of Michael Phillpot as the Club's President. They
were joined by Richard Simmons, Chairman of the Board and Club
Captain Pete Rodger. In addition, the Past Captains invited
four guests, Tom Grogan, David Abercrombie, Niall MacCabe and
Eric Line who represented the other Brighton & District
Golfing Society Clubs. Everyone congratulated Norman Milburn
on his election last week as the Captain of the 'Sussex Golf
Captains' for 2011/12 (the first West Hove Member to achieve
this role). |

Further to our news story dated 24 February 2011 about the
Club's Fairway Improvement Programme, we have now been advised
that we will be receiving delivery of the humus/compost from

intervening weekend). This means that we expect about 7 or 8
large lorry-loads each day, so Members and visitors are
respectfully advised to drive extra carefully along our access
road. The Club will ensure that there will be cautionary
health and safety signs on display.
Please also be aware of the sheep that are currently grazing

An anecdote
- Club Member Phil Quinlan recently had a holiday in Brazil
and (as you do) took the Club's centenary book "The History
of West Hove Golf Club 1910-2010" for light reading.
Whilst reading the final chapters by his hotel pool-side, he
was approached by a fellow Brit who had noticed the book
cover. He made himself known to Phil and said that he had
lived in Hove in the past and knew some of the older West Hove
members, as well as many Sussex cricketers and Brighton & Hove
Albion footballers. He turned out to be Mike Griffiths who
captained Sussex CCC between 1968-73 and who is currently
Chairman of the MCC Cricket Committee. Phil ended up
presenting the book to Mike as he was keen to read our
history. Some of our older Members may also recall Mike's father, Stewart
Cathie Griffiths (better known as Billy), who also captained
and kept wicket for Sussex immediately after World War II.

Club's website received its
200,000th 'hit' today
The Club's 'new' website isn't quite four years old yet, but
there was a significant achievement today when it received its
200,000th visitor. Our first 100,000 visits were achieved in
January 2010, after 34 months, but our second 100,000 took
just 14 months. The website has been visited from 115
countries around the world and boasts over 100 pages (check
the SITE MAP tab above). One of the key pages is the HOME page
where, amongst other things, Members can log in to book tee
times and also see the latest news headlines. The NEWS page is
always up-to-date as is the DIARY page which lists events not
shown in the Members' 'Events and Membership Directory'.

Richard Daughtrey selects the new 'Club Vice-Captain elect'
The Club is pleased to report that our current Vice-Captain,
Richard Daughtrey, has today announced his choice of 'Club
Vice-Captain elect'. Congratulations go to John Godley for
being selected and proposed by Richard Daughtrey together with
the Club President, Michael Phillpot, and Club Captain, Pete
Rodger.
John, who has been a Member of West Hove GC since September
2002, was initially co-opted on to the Golf Committee in May
2009 before being formally elected in November of that year at
the Club’s AGM. He is currently Chairman of Match & Handicap.
John says it is an honour and privilege to have been nominated
as 'Club Vice-Captain elect’ and, subject to the normal
formalities, he looks forward to starting his year as Vice
Captain in November 2011 and working closely with Club Captain
elect Richard Daughtrey in his year as Club Captain. Many
congratulations John. |

Over 70 Members
and guests attended last night's St. Patrick's Quiz Night
when they learnt, inter alia, what an orchiopexy was!
The 13 teams tried to answer an array of questions on a wide
variety of topics in what proved to be a very close contest.
The runners-up, with 85 points, were one of the three teams
from the Amigos (golf society), comprising Ted & June Ward,
Mark & Penny Charlottes and Steve Gurr. The winning team
("Megan's Misfits") scored 87 points and comprised Megan Bibby,
Howard Coulson, Gordon & Penny Eaton and Keith & Pam Fender.
Special thanks go to Brian Murphy and Lynn Stoner for
organising and running this very successful event. Another
quiz is scheduled to be run later this year, probably in
September, so keep your eyes open and check the notice-boards
and this website's 'Diary' page.

Club Captain,
Pete Rodger, achieves a hat-trick of 'aces'
Being your Club's Captain is always an expensive year, but our
man, Pete Rodger, fell into the trap of making it more
expensive when he achieved the third hole-in-one of his career
today.
Whilst playing his normal friendly fours this morning, with
playing partners Ray Barontini, Hammy Brown and Pete Hall, he
sank his tee shot at the 191 yard par-3 13th hole using a no.
4 rescue club. His previous two 'aces' were achieved at our
short 7th hole. As is befitting a Captain, he treated everyone
present in the bar afterwards to a hearty drink. Well done
Pete.

The Members' online tee-time booking
system will soon go 'live'
Following Gary Salt’s announcement on 23 February (see the
news story below), the Club is very pleased to advise Members
that from 1 April 2011 they will be able to book tee-times
online. However, you must firstly ‘register’ via this website
and you will need your swipe-card number (which will act as
your user-name) and a suitable password of your choice.
You may register
NOW – there is no need to wait until
1 April 2011.
To register,
please go to our
‘Home’ page and click on
the link beside the scrolling “Members' Online Tee
Bookings” and follow the simple instructions. Most
importantly, you will find that the service provides you with
very useful ‘Help’ documents for registering - and adding,
editing or deleting bookings.
From 1 April 2011, provided you have
pre-registered, you may start to book online. Weekend
tee-times may be booked from midday, 15 days in advance (e.g.
for Saturday bookings you may book from noon on the Friday 15
days earlier - and for Sunday bookings, from noon on the
Saturday 15 days earlier). Weekday tee-times will continue to
be released for booking on a rolling ‘one-week-in-advance’
basis, as at present.
All competitions and Society bookings that
require reserved tee-times will have been ‘booked’ by the
office so that only free tee-times will be available for
Members to book.
When you book you will be expected to enter
the names of your playing partners. To help you, the system
has a ‘drop down’ name menu similar to the PSI terminal which
you use to enter competition scores. In order to avoid any
duplicated names, (something which happens frequently with our
current paper booking procedure) the system will ensure that
there is only one tee-time, per member, per day. Once
you have made a booking you will then receive an e-mail
confirmation.
Members may access the system via this
website at any time to view ALL of the bookings (e.g. to check
their tee-time if booked by a friend). However, for the
integrity of the system, only the Member who made the booking
will be able to alter or cancel a booking, but, Members will
be able to delete their own name (e.g. if they find that
someone has pre-booked a tee-time that is not suitable).
If a Member does not have access to the
internet (either permanently or temporarily) they may still
‘phone or visit the Pro-shop and the staff there will complete
the booking – and, of course, this procedure will continue to
apply for our visitors. |

A timely
reminder of two of the benefits of being a West Hove Member
With Spring hopefully just around the corner, it seems a
good time to remind Members of the special arrangements we
have for them to play other courses.
Firstly, we have special reciprocal arrangements with ten
other Golf Clubs, all within one day's return travel from
Hove, where you can play FREE. Secondly, there are now 111
golf clubs belonging to the Association of James Braid
Courses, which are predominately spread across the UK, where
you are able to play at a discounted green-fee. (When we first
reported this benefit, last November, there were just 51 such
clubs in the UK, with 4 in Eire and 1 in the USA.)
As there are strict rules regarding the booking of tee-times
at any of these other clubs, it is important that you follow
the correct procedures.
Please
to find details about both of these great benefits. |

The Club's
Fairway Improvement Programme is scheduled to start in April
In July 2010 the Club announced that a long-term fairway
improvement programme would start in the Spring of 2011. This
was followed by a presentation at the Club's AGM in November
by General Manager, Gary Salt.
Now that Spring is not far away, Gary has announced that about
375 tonnes of compost will start to be delivered from Monday 4
April and will be deposited behind the 11th competition tee.
Subject to suitably dry weather conditions, the application of
this compost will start from 11 April, to coincide with the
regular treatment to our greens, and should be completed
within 5 days.
Golf will still
be possible during this work, but Members and guests may
experience some delays. The Club will, however, be taking
steps to minimise any disruption and thanks everyone in
advance for their co-operation and understanding. If you would

An online
tee-time booking system will be introduced soon
The Club's General Manager,
Gary Salt, made the following announcement today:
"The Club is pleased to announce that it has now purchased
the software to enable Members to book their tee-times online.
After an initial period of training for staff in both the
Club's Office and Professionals' Shop, it will be made
available to Members. It is envisaged this will be in the
early Spring and a further announcement will be made closer to
that time.
All Members will be invited to register online and will then
be provided with a user-name and password to enable them to
make and alter their bookings. Only the Member who has made
the booking, or a Member playing in that group, will be able
to make alterations or cancel. Members will still be able to
make bookings by 'phoning or visiting the Professionals' Shop
in the traditional manner, but the 'paper' tee-time method
will be replaced with the computerised system after going
‘live’. It’s important to point out that it’s a very
'user-friendly' system and we hope that this will ensure a
smoother and easier way for Members to make their bookings,
particularly for busy periods." |

Six fabulous
new Social Functions have been added to the 2011 programme
The Club is delighted to announce that six new social
events have been announced for 2011. They include a team Quiz
Night in March, a 70's Fancy Dress Party in June, a special
day out to 'The Open' at Royal St. George's, an outing to
Glorious Goodwood for 'Ladies' Day', a trip to the London
Palladium to see 'The Wizard of Oz' in November and, finally,
the Club's increasingly popular New Year's Eve Party, which
this year will be a Masked Ball.
The first of these events, the St. Patrick's Quiz Night, will
take place on Friday 18 March and entry forms may be obtained
from the bar or office, NOW. Further details of this, and the
other functions, are available on the 'Notice
Board' page of this website. The Club hopes that Members,
their families and guests, will support these new events in
addition to those already published.
Club Captain, Pete Rodger, is pleased to announce that one of
the currently published events, the Men's Dinner, will this
year be held at West Hove GC. This takes place on 21 October
and includes a three course dinner followed by 'After Dinner
Speaker' Adger Brown who is one of the most versatile
comedians on the mainstream circuit of cabaret and variety.
All of this for just £30, so note your diaries now! |

Sunday
lunches at West Hove Golf Club
General Manager, Gary Salt, made the following announcement
today...
"In previous years Sunday lunch at the Golf Club has been
confined mainly to special occasions, for example Mothers' Day
or Fathers' Day. This will continue in the future, but now
that our Caterer, Clay Morris, is firmly established at West
Hove, both he and the Club are keen to provide Sunday lunches
to our Members, Associates and guests on a much more regular
basis.
As from Sunday 20th February 2010, and on every Sunday
thereafter, Clay and his team will be offering one, two and
three course lunches at the Golf Club, so why not come along
and enjoy an excellent lunch. Numbers will be limited, so at
your earliest convenience please book a time by calling or
speaking to the catering staff, giving details of the names of
any guests you may wish to invite." |

Hove.
John, who plays off 14, achieved his 'ace' at the 191 yard

Jay Stally |
The inaugural
(2010) 'Kevin Palmer Order of Merit Trophy' has been won by
Jay Stally
Just over a year
ago, on 15 January 2010, this website reported details of a
new competition, the "Kevin Palmer Order of Merit Trophy".
Open to seven-day male members, points were awarded to the top
ten players in each of the 2010 weekend qualifying
competitions (but excluding the Club Championship).
John Godley,
Chairman of Match & Handicap, has today announced that the
inaugural 2010 event was deservedly won by Jay Stally with 60
points, from Damon Raikes (56) and Howard Coulson (55). Jay
won 4 of the 34 events and 146 players amassed a total of 1941
points.
If you would
like to see the full 2010 results, they have been posted on
the notice-board in the Clubhouse foyer. In 2011, why not try
to emulate Jay's success - simply enter as many of the Club's
2011 weekend competitions as you can - there is no separate
entry fee. Good luck. |

West Hove Golf
Club has donated over £10,000 to the NSPCC
The
Club has recently heard from the National Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children that the Ladies' Section has
donated an amazing £10,499.50 since 2006. (It's a pity we
didn't find an extra 50p to round it off to £10,500! - Ed.) As
a consequence, the Ladies' Section has been invited to become
an honorary associate member of the charity.

The
Seniors'
13-hole Texas Scramble was played today in appalling
conditions
This event was postponed from 3 December 2010 because of a
foot of snow on the course last year. Unfortunately, the
Seniors' committee's decision to postpone this competition to
today nearly backfired as it turned out to be one of the
wettest days ever seen at West Hove. The course was almost
unplayable at times with many greens flooded, but the Seniors
are a hardy bunch and seven of the teams managed to complete
all 13 holes. But our course drains exceedingly well and by
tomorrow it will be back to normal.
This competition is run alongside the Seniors' Christmas Lunch
and followed by the annual prize-giving.

READ ALL ABOUT IT! READ
ALL ABOUT IT!
The Club’s centenary plans included the commissioning of a
centenary book, and the Club is delighted to announce that it
has today taken delivery of these books and they are ready for
Members to collect. The hardback book entitled “The History of
West Hove Golf Club 1910-2010”, was written by John Vinicombe
and tells the story of the Club’s turbulent history – warts
and all! It is full of stories, anecdotes and photos and
includes a chapter on the Club’s 2010 centenary year.
Everyone who was a Member
or employee at the Club’s centenary date of 22 September 2010
is eligible for their own personal copy, free of charge, which
can be collected from the office with immediate effect.
Members will be able to collect books on behalf of other
Members but distribution is strictly on the basis of one copy
per Member. Extra copies can be obtained by way of a donation
at the discounted rate of £7.50 per book.
Members of the Centenary
Committee will be available in the Clubhouse on Saturdays and
Sundays (starting tomorrow) between 12 noon and 3pm for the
next few weeks to assist with the distribution. So don’t
delay, get your book as soon as possible – and enjoy a great
read.

A chance for
higher handicap members to represent West Hove in a new
competition
We are delighted to report that in 2011 the Sussex County Golf
Union will be introducing a new matchplay team event for
players in handicap categories 2 and 3 (i.e. from handicap
5.5).
This new inter-Club Championship will allow higher handicap
members of Sussex Golf Clubs to compete in a County-wide event
along similar lines to the scratch PAV Trophy. However, the
format for this competition will be 4-ball better-ball
matchplay off of an active CONGU handicap. Teams will comprise
4 pairs and each pair must consist of one category 2 player
(handicap 6-12) and one category 3 player (handicap 13-20).
Club Captain,
Pete Rodger, has appointed Brian Hazelgrove as the non-playing
Team Manager and David Friend as the Team Captain and they
will select our teams. Members are asked to watch this
website, the Club's notice-boards and the SCGU website for
further news over the coming weeks when full details will be
made public. |

Last night saw
nearly 100 revellers celebrate the start of the Club's 101st
year
Another
excellent New Year's Eve Party took place last night when the
theme was "red ties and tiaras". Nearly 100 members and guests
enjoyed some fabulous food from Clay Morris and his team
before dancing into the early hours to music from Mick Rose.
Special thanks go to Brian Murphy, Lynn Stoner and everybody
else who contributed to another successful social function.
